Fueling India’s Future — Be Part of the Energy Revolution

What is Ethanol?

Ethanol is a biofuel produced from organic matter such as plants, agricultural waste, and microorganisms. It’s a renewable energy source that can be blended with gasoline to power vehicles.

Uses of Ethanol:

  • Transportation Fuel: Ethanol powers vehicles, reducing dependence on fossil fuels.
  • Industrial Solvent: Used in cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, and cleaning products.
  • Beverage Industry: A key ingredient in the production of alcoholic beverages.
Business Contract: In Business Agreement with IOCL, HPCL, and BPCL

Benefits of Ethanol Self-Sufficiency in India:

Energy Security: Reduces dependence on imported fossil fuels and enhances national energy security.

Economic Benefits: Saves foreign exchange and boosts the domestic economy.

Renewable Energy Source: Ethanol is clean, renewable, and sustainable.

Environmental Benefits: Reduces greenhouse gas emissions and air pollution.

Rural Development: Promotes sugarcane and feedstock cultivation, creating rural jobs.

Diversified Energy Mix: Blending ethanol reduces reliance on traditional fuels.

Job Creation: Ethanol production and blending create significant employment opportunities.

Achieving ethanol self-sufficiency contributes to India’s energy independence, economic growth, and sustainable development.

Problem Statement

Agricultural surplus often goes unutilized or wasted, especially grains like maize, broken rice, etc.
Current ethanol production is overly dependent on sugarcane, which is water-intensive and region-specific.
India relies heavily on imported fossil fuels, exposing the economy to price volatility, trade imbalances, and carbon emissions.
India must meet its 20% ethanol blending target by 2025, but current production capacity is inadequate.

Demand and Supply Gap in India

DEMAND

Target Blending (E20 by 2025):

~1,016 crore L

(for blending with Petrol)

Total Ethanol demand

~1,350 crore liters/year

(Including industrial and other use)

SUPPLY

Current Production (2024–25):

~330–370 crore L

(~20% contribution in total ethanol supply)

Expected Supply (2025–26):

~470 crore liters

Still ~600–650 crore L to balance sugarcane shortfalls
